A little more progress.  Almost done.

32
Thank you, Brandon.  I'm looking forward to finishing this car so I can start my Challenge project - a caboose I've seen in a book.

33
Yesterday I finished most of the work on the flat car that carries the water tank.  I installed and weathered the scratch built stirrup steps, made and installed the coupler cut levers, and added the couplers and trucks.  The only thing left of the car itself is the brake staff and brake wheel which I will add after the last of the work is done on the water tank.

Right now I am adding some water seepage on the water tank and working on the hose I want to add to the deck of the car next to the drain pipe.

Another day or two should see this project done.

Thanks, Phil.  I managed to do a lot of little things on the car and the water tank yesterday.  The tank is still not glued on since I want to be able to rest the car on its deck today as I install the stirrup steps.

I've made a tool box for one end of the car.  I'm getting ready to finish the details on the tank and the car, and then glue the tank in place.

Challenges / Group Challenge: Pennslyvania Logging Caboose
« on: January 18, 2012, 10:35:22 AM »
My car for the Challenge will be a caboose based on this photo found on page 327 of Thomas Taber's "Ghost Lumber Towns of Central Pennsylvania" book. That book is No. 3 in the series: "Logging Railroad Era of Lumbering in Pennsylvania". I have established an e-mail relationship with Mr. Taber and the following photos are posted with his permission.

And a little more of a closeup.

First up will be to build a 26' flat car as the basis of the caboose.

I just converted one of the BCH MinitrainS Plymouth loco's to hon3 the other night.  If you're looking for a small diesel, this might be an option.  Conversion took about 10 minutes to pull the wheels out on the axles and open the wheel holes up on the bottom plate.  These little buggers run really nicely.  Very very very quiet.  I'll have to post some pics of the conversion.  I'm going to detail it, repaint it and weather it.  Should make a neat little engine.

Phil, did you take any pictures of your work on this?  This sounds like something I might be able to do.

Guys, I'm ready to start building a car for the Group Challenge.  Any further ideas of having one thread for all the posts or separate threads with 'Group Challenge' in the name?

Either way, I like the idea of a 'finish projects' thread as a summary of what we all accomplished.  We could include links to our individual threads in that summary if that is the way we go.

Thanks, Phil.

I spent some time yesterday working on some more detail for the water car.

I dug out my ladder jig and made up the ladder I need.

I then took an SS Ltd. valve casting and drilled it out to accept a piece of .032" brass rod.  cutting a small wafer of brass tubing and again drilling it out to accept the .032" rod, I made up a reasonable looking drain faucet.  (.032" scales out to just under 3" in HO.)

Today I want to work on a hose reel to attach to the deck of the car.

Adrian, my HO standard gauge is still NIB.  I purchased the HOn3 MDC Shay as a 'work in progress' from the previous owner, but haven't done anything with it yet.  I do have the Johnston MDC Shay book as a reference, which I hear can be a life saver.

I have a Bachman Shay in HO, MDC kits in both HO and HOn3, and an unpowered Keystone kit as well.

I'll join in.  I should finish my water car in the next week or so and it will be time to get a new car on the bench!
