Kent.....

Put the name Mark Schutzer into your browser and search for his page on refitting old brass locomotives. He has some extensive web sites and has good ideas. I first saw him at the PCR convention last year in Reno.

Great article.  I have the same engine #9.  What kit / part# did you order from Locodoc, I'd like to do the same upgrade.

He has a gear kit #305 I think but the motor was also part of it.
The gear kit info is on this site:
http://roundbell.com/hon3conversions.html
Search for "Lambert C&S 2-6-0 (Nakamura)"

The best way to do it is to email Wayne Weiss the Loco Doc with your info.
He emailed and then called me back and then took the order over the phone.
His email is

A little update.
Good news.
I powered the engine up in my hand then tweaked theengine up/down alignment screw. The noise was reduced to a very reasonable level.

Bad news.
Rookie mistake. I brought the engine and tender to a friends house to strip the clear finish off with ground walnut in a sand blaster prior to painting. He used way to much pressure in the initial attempt and destroyed the tender.  :(. The tender was expanded like a balloon when air pressure got in through a crack under a sidewall. Now to find a C&S tender.....

I have never tried to remove the clear coat on early brass locos.  I've found it to be a really good primer and I've never had some paint not stick to it.  I have washed locos in lacquer thinner so I may have removed some of the clear coat but my old auto body days say that if something is really well stuck to the metal......... leave it alone.

Thanks Wayne, your info lead me right to it.  Found motor and gear.

Picked up a 2nd mogul PFM looks to be a #21 or 22, was relettered.  In really good shape but runs pretty bad.  Need to swap out motor and the see about any needed regearing.

Thanks Cameron

Some good news on the tender. I ended up unsoldering the entire tender and then flattened out the panels pretty well with a small brass hammer. I have soldered most of it back together. It was a learning experience for sure. Still have a few pieces to go.

Well I tried to rebuild the tender myself but finally gave up in frustration. I finally shipped it off to an online friend in FL.
A week later it came back. He did an excellent job restoring it.
I traded him 8 pair of new Kadee O scale couplers so I think we both got a good deal.

Paint is next.
Where to get decals?
What and where do I find parts for the "bear trap" spark arrestor?
What paint brand and colors?
What paint for inside the cab?
